The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan makes health insurance available
to people who have a problem getting insurance due to a pre-existing
condition. The Plan covers a broad range of health benefits, including
primary and specialty care, hospital care, and prescription drugs. Does not
charge you a higher premium just because of your medical condition. Does
not base eligibility on income. For more information visit:

In April 2011, the Helmsley Charitable
Trust launched its Type 1 Diabetes Camp Grants Initiative to support camp
scholarships (camperships) for youth throughout the United States. The $1.3
million initiative expands on the Trust's 2010 pilot initiative and will
allow more low-income youth with type 1 diabetes to attend summer
residential or day camps nationwide in 2011 and 2012.
Grantees for the initiative were selected through a limited Request for
Proposals (RFP) process in early 2011. The 15 camps represent 14 different
states and were selected for their commitment to providing educational
diabetes management in a safe, fun environment. Most of the organizations
awarded grants are members of the Diabetes Education and Camping Association
(DECA) and accredited by the American Camping Association (ACA).

Researchers, from Palo Alto University, are conducting a study to learn about the impact of various forms of
support on quality of life for parents and siblings of children and adolescents with diabetes; as well as, the
psychosocial effect felt by the siblings. The study is open to children, ages 6-17 years, whose sibling has been
diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. For households with more than 1 sibling, the sibling that is closest in age to
the child with Type I Diabetes should participate in the study, and parents or caregivers with a child who has
been diagnosed with Type I Diabetes.

The Juvenile Diabetes No Limits Foundation has been busy working on plans for this year's version of the safe driving program for teens with diabetes. Their plan is to bring the program to several locations this year and are working with other diabetes organizations such as the American Diabetes Association. They will be bringing the program back to the Chicago area in August and the Twin Cities in September. Visit JDNoLimits.org for more information and other locations.
Their advisory board met late last year to discuss 2011 plans for the driving program. With the help of the diabetes organizations they are partnering with, they will be able to reach out to many families with teens with diabetes who will qualify to participate in the program. The program is being offered at no-cost again this year. (Earlier this year, they produced a video that will help promote the driving program to families and teens. It includes some of their supporters and their teens who have diabetes - it's "real people telling their story" about having diabetes and driving safely. They reinforce the importance of this program for diabetic teens who are reaching one of the first milestones in their lives when they take steps toward personal independence.)
This year's program is called "Check B4U Drive"
